Alprazolam overdose symptoms are derived from its pharmacological action and include drowsiness, poorly articulated speech, motor incoordination, coma and respiratory depression. Serious sequelae are rare unless other drugs or ethanol are ingested simultaneously. Treatment of overdose consists primarily of providing respiratory and cardiovascular support. The value of dialysis has not been determined. Flumazenil can be used as an adjunct treatment for the management of respiratory and cardiovascular function associated with overdose.

Duration of treatment: Data are available to support use for up to 6 months for anxiety and depression and for 8 months in the treatment of panic disorders.
Treatment interruption: To suspend treatment with alprazolam, the dose should be reduced slowly in accordance with good medical practice.
It is suggested that the daily dose of alprazolam be decreased by no more than 0.5 mg every 3 days. Some patients may require an even slower dose reduction (see General Precautions).
